Toronto Star – B.C. Wants This Veteran English Teacher to Prove She Knows the Language. She Feels Targeted Because of Her African Ancestry

When recruiters from British Columbia came to Toronto looking for teachers, Kamey Munsamy was pleased to find her skills in high demand. But once she decided to accept a job offer in Vancouver, Munsamy got an unpleasant surprise. The B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch, the provincial body that certifies teachers’ qualifications and allows them to work in the province, said she could only continue working in the province if she took an English language proficiency test in the midst of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

CTV News – Renewed Calls to Grant Residency to Asylum Seekers on COVID-19 Front Lines

There are renewed calls to grant permanent residency to asylum-seekers who’ve been working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and Quebec. Last month, Ottawa announced a special program that would do just that — but it can only help about 1,000 people, and only in some sectors. Advocates say there are thousands of others risking their lives.

London Free Press – In Praise of London Immigrants’ Front-Line COVID-19 Contributions

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the London region in earnest in mid-March, front-line workers answered the call to help. And among the thousands of nurses, personal support workers and grocery store workers who continued to do their jobs despite the risks were immigrants who call London home. The London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership is looking to highlight some of those contributions made by people who have come to Canada as part of its I Am London campaign.

Toronto Star – Lawyer Says Client Tested Positive for COVID-19 After ‘Reckless’ Border Agency Made Him Attend Hearing in Person

A Toronto man facing removal from Canada to Nigeria tested positive for coronavirus after attending an in-person meeting at a Canada Border Services Agency office, his lawyer says. The incident from earlier this month has lawyer Robin Seligman questioning why her client wasn’t offered the chance to conduct a teleconference or virtual hearing, given the ongoing global pandemic.

Reuters – Staying Home: Drop in Foreign Students Bad Omen for Canada’s Labor Market

Travel restrictions and a shift to online learning has dramatically cut the number of international students expected to attend Canadian universities and colleges this fall, and the decline will ripple through Canada’s labor market. New study permits for foreign students issued by Canada fell by 22.3% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same period of 2019, amid strict COVID-19 border controls that have blocked many new foreign students from entering Canada.
