Toronto Star – They Were Coming to Canada to Care for a Relative After Her Surgery. They Say Discrimination Stopped Them at the Airport
Andrea and Attila Kiss were set to fly out from the Budapest airport last year to visit her sister in Toronto when they were stopped and referred to further screening. After extensive questioning, the Roma Hungarian couple were told by staff at the check-in counter that they could not proceed because Canadian officials had just cancelled their “electronic travel authorization.” The couple asked why it had been cancelled and, unbeknownst to the agent, started recording the conversation, which ended with the agent telling them, “The biggest problem is that the person whom you are travelling to has no status.”

A Winnipeg public speaker, educator, activist and advocate will be speaking in front of a parliamentary committee Thursday on behalf of local refugees. Dorota Blumczynska, executive director of the Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) and president of the Canadian Council of Refugees, told 680 CJOB she’ll be speaking to legislators in Ottawa as an expert witness about new Canadians and their participation in democracy.
National Post – Why Quebec’s Refugee Sponsorship Suspension Is so Misguided
For more than 40 years, Canada has been at the forefront of private refugee sponsorship. But in October 2020, the Quebec government announced a partial suspension of refugee sponsorships in the province. Until Nov. 1, 2021, sponsorship organizations are not permitted to sponsor refugees to Quebec. Quebec’s immigration department justified the suspension in the face of “serious allegations” of fraud within the program, without providing details, ostensibly to avoid prejudicing ongoing investigations.

Several years ago, Fulgence Ndagijimana was imprisoned for his religious beliefs in his native Burundi. A group of people in Saskatoon worked hard to secure his release through fundraising, a letter-writing campaign and other advocacy. One of those people was Eric James, who was just 12 years old at the time. He created and maintained a website, which attracted more than 1,200 signatures calling for Ndagijimana’s release. James and Ndagijimana have raised more than $30,000 so far.

Lower-income and non-white families are opting for the Toronto District School Board’s online-only classes during the COVID-19 pandemic at a greater rate than white and wealthier families, according to fresh data presented to trustees. Students of South Asian and East Asian background, those with lower socio-economic status, and those whose parents don’t have a university education make up a disproportionate number of the 70,000 students enrolled in the TDSB’s virtual school system this fall, the data shows.
