Toronto Star – A New Ranking Is Giving Canada’s Approach to Immigrants Top Marks, with a Notable Exception
Canada has been ranked fourth in the world when it comes to integrating immigrants, after it fell out of the top five nations under the former Conservative government in the previous survey. The country jumped two spots in the latest Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) computer by an international network of experts in recognition of policies that emphasize equal rights opportunities and security for newcomers.
Globe and Mail – Program That Gives Residency to ‘Guardian Angel’ Asylum-Seekers to Open Dec. 14
Some asylum-seekers who toiled on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis earlier this year will be able to apply for permanent residency in Canada beginning Dec. 14. The federal government announced the program for the “guardian angels” working in health care back in August and has spent the last several months hammering out the details. Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino unveiled more specifics Wednesday, saying there will be two streams – one for those who live in Quebec and one for those outside the province.

Chan and Tong, along with other final-year students and recent graduates from Hong Kong, are hopeful they can settle permanently in Canada after Ottawa announced new immigration measures on Nov. 12 that will make it easier and quicker for them to settle here. Canada is seeing a surge in interest from potential immigrants from the region through the number of study permit applications and skilled worker applications as political unrest in Hong Kong continues.

Plus de 100 travailleurs agricoles migrants de Trinité-et-Tobago ne peuvent rentrer chez eux et devront probablement passer l’hiver dans la région de Haldimand et Norfolk, près de Niagara Falls, en Ontario. Ils ne peuvent rentrer à la maison en raison d’inquiétudes liées à la pandémie, selon le médecin hygiéniste de la région. Les agents consulaires essaient de régler le problème. Ils devront, entre autres, subir des tests de dépistage avant que les travailleurs puissent quitter le Canada, explique le Dr Shanker Nesathurai, médecin hygiéniste de l’unité sanitaire de Haldimand-Norfolk.
CBC News – Brampton Student Says College Dismissed Anti-Sikh Remarks Made to Him as ‘Historical Fact’
A Brampton college student is accusing his school of mishandling his complaint about a fellow student after it dismissed anti-Sikh comments the man made to him during an online class, referring to the statements simply as “historical fact.” Prabhjot Singh, 25, says he was making a presentation via Zoom to his immigration class at CDI College in Mississauga in October when he was interrupted by another student.
CBC News – Chatham-Kent Conducting Survey to Learn About Experiences of Immigrants
For the first time, the municipality is conducting an online survey to assess how welcome immigrants feel in the community. The survey questions are based on the 17 characteristics of a welcoming community, such as access to housing, employment, transportation and opportunities for community engagement, Audrey Ansell, Chatham-Kent’s manager of community attraction and promotion, explained. The survey also asks about experiences with discrimination.
