A former truck driver who caused the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash has submitted paperwork with reasons why he should not be sent back to India when he gets out of prison. Jaskirat Singh Sidhu is now waiting for the Canada Border Services Agency to write a report that will recommend whether he be allowed to stay in his adopted country or be deported. A grieving father of one of the hockey players killed will be waiting, too. Scott Thomas said he aches everyday for his 18-year-old son, Evan, but submitted a letter in support of Sidhu.

CTV News – How a Nigerian Immigrant’s YouTube Videos Are Helping Other Newcomers Adapt to Saskatoon

The Open Door Society is currently seeing about six to eight families a month. Ian Shaw with the Open Door Society says before the pandemic, they would see about 3,700 newcomer families coming in per year and in March when the pandemic started, they saw a big drop. Numbers have come up since then. Jessica Liao, youth program facilitator, tells CTV News that a video project helps youth express themselves through technology. The videos are posted to YouTube. Making videos is popular with another newcomer from Nigeria, Marina lyeme-Eteng.

Le Soleil – Bilan démographique des régions : une croissance à prendre avec prudence

La COVID-19 a eu des impacts sur le bilan démographique 2019-2020 dévoilé par l’Institut de la statistique du Québec, alors que le flux migratoire a bondi dans les régions et diminué dans les grands centres. Cependant, le professeur en démographie à l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), Marc Tremblay, croit qu’il est encore trop tôt pour évaluer les effets réels de la pandémie sur la démographie.

Un reportage sur un garçon de 4 ans et sa sœur de 2 ans qui ont été séparés de leur père à la frontière canadienne par l’Agence des services frontaliers du Canada (ASFC) a fait grand bruit avant Noël. Le reportage de Radio-Canada soulignait aussi le fait que ne tient pas de statistiques sur le nombre d’enfants qu’elle sépare d’un parent détenu à des fins d’immigration. Cette absence de données est sur le point d’être corrigée.

The federal government has made dramatic progress in reuniting Canadians and their foreign spouses in the wake of pandemic separations — and advocates are urging Ottawa to keep going. In September, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino deployed 66 per cent more staff to handle spousal sponsorship applications in Canada and set an ambitious target to process 18,000 cases between October and December.

CBC News – HRM Population Hits Record High, Propelled by New Immigrants

The latest figures from Statistics Canada indicate the population of the Halifax Regional Municipality hit a record high of 448,544 in July — up 9,015 from the previous year. Immigration from outside Canada accounts for the largest portion of the increase, with 5,751 people from outside the country choosing to call Halifax home, according to a report from the agency released last week.
