Globe and Mail – Refugees Turned Away in Record Numbers as Countries Close Borders Due to COVID-19

According to new figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, only 22,770 refugees were resettled globally by the agency, while it identified 1.44 million refugees in need of urgent protection. The agency said in its report published Monday that these are the lowest refugee-resettlement numbers the organization has witnessed in almost two decades, attributing the drop to low quotas put forward by states and the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed departures and programs.

CBC News – New Immigrants in N.S. Have Employment Challenges, Opportunities

When Ken Oguzie arrived in Nova Scotia in 2014, he was faced with the challenge of convincing prospective employers that his previous work experience counted for something. He was very well qualified academically, with a bachelor’s degree in business management from a U.K. university and a masters degree in social policy and development from the London School of Economics. But even with this background, Oguzie said his early job-hunting experience was like a “roller-coaster.”

CBC News – Filipina Nanny Asks to Stay in Canada After Kidney Disease Diagnosis

Kherin Dimalanta arrived three and a half years ago under a live-in caregiver visa. After a few years of working in Ottawa, she had hoped to apply for permanent residency and bring her own two children to live with her in Canada. But six months after she arrived, Dimalanta went for a routine blood test as part of an insurance application and discovered she had chronic kidney disease. The diagnosis meant she was no longer medically admissible to Canada, even though she had already worked and paid taxes in Canada for months before she fell ill.
