CBC News – Newcomers to Quebec Need More Opportunities to Learn About Indigenous History, Activists Say

When Muzna Dureid moved to Canada in 2016, she could name most of the provinces, understood the levels of government, and spoke French. But she soon realized there were things about her new home that she had never been taught; namely, about the nuances of the country’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. Talking with other newcomers, she realized there was a gap in understanding when it came to Indigenous culture and history. People were often shocked to find out about things like the residential school system, she said.

CTV News – For Immigrants in N.L., ‘Friendly’ Doesn’t Always Mean ‘Welcoming:’ Economist

Tony Fang, a professor at Memorial University, says it’s great to see the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives commit to increasing immigration to the province as part of their platforms in the provincial election. Attracting new people is exactly what the province should be doing, Fang said. “But can you actually retain them? That’s a big question,” he said in a recent interview.

Toronto Star – Canada to Officially Open Door to Young Hong Kongers Next Week

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced Thursday that the special immigration pathway for recent graduates and skilled workers from Hong Kong will officially open on Feb. 8, 2021—from that date, Hong Kong residents will be able to apply for new open work permits. Chronicle Herald – Ottawa Promises Better System in Place for Temporary Foreign Workers on Farms

Government officials and the agricultural sector are much better positioned to meet the needs this growing season of the temporary foreign workers needed to plant, grow and harvest crops in the local agri-food sector, Liberal Minister of Immigration Marco Mendicino said Friday. A year ago, COVID-19 infections were rampant among those essential farm workers, two of whom died in Essex County after having contracted the coronavirus.

CBC News – Entrepreneur Network Helps Immigrants Start Their Businesses Before They Land in Montreal

Thierry Rassam is the CEO of BridgeMTL, a not-for-profit focused on helping immigrant entrepreneurs establish their businesses. Rassam explains that personal networks and resources are invaluable for Canadian-born entrepreneurs, but those advantages are not always readily available to people immigrating here. This is why he and his colleagues offer their networks to immigrant entrepreneurs who might need the help. The goal, Rassam says, is to ease their transition to Quebec, and to connect them to the wider business community.
