Windsor Star – Trucker Who Smuggled 11 Nigerians Across Bridge Hopes to Avoid Jail

A trucker who claimed he had no idea there were 11 people crowded behind a curtain in the driver’s cab of his commercial rig as he crossed the Ambassador Bridge in 2017 is hoping a Windsor judge might see his human smuggling action as that of a Good Samaritan. It was actually the judge who brought up that term during a sentencing hearing on Tuesday for Paul Ngoue-Ngamelou to describe a possible motivation behind his efforts to illegally conceal the would-be refugee stowaways.

Globe and Mail – Federal Government Urged to End Contract with Visa Application Centre in Beijing

The Canadian government is facing calls to cancel an arrangement in Beijing where Chinese police own a company that collects details of people applying for visas to Canada. As The Globe and Mail reported earlier this week, Canada’s visa application centre in Beijing is operated by Beijing Shuangxiong Foreign Service Company, which is owned by the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau. And at least some of the people working inside the centre are members of the Chinese Communist Party, recruited from a school that trains the next generation of party elite.
