The federal government’s plan to bring 400,000 immigrants into the country this year is a good goal, but they also need to address a massive backlog created during the pandemic of people waiting in the system, says a Kitchener immigration lawyer. Jennifer Roggemann said every person immigrating to Canada has to do a fingerprint. That has to be done in person and between March and July of 2020, the buildings where people could do that were closed. Even after they were open, there were people waiting for their turn.
CBC News – North Sees 34% Drop in International Students Due to COVID-19
A new report shows 34 per cent fewer international students came North in 2020 compared to the previous year. Robert Falconer, author of the report and a research associate at the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy, says it may partly have been due to the ensuing travel restrictions after the pandemic began last March. “While the numbers, of course, are quite smaller for the territories relatively speaking, they’ve been the most impacted — more than any other jurisdiction in Canada,” Falconer said.

Le gouvernement fédéral s’apprête à garantir le droit de travailler en français au sein de grandes entreprises de compétence fédérale au Québec, mais aussi dans les régions à forte densité francophone ailleurs au Canada. Selon les informations obtenues par Radio-Canada, les nouvelles mesures viseront à protéger le droit de travailler en français au sein d’entreprises sous autorité fédérale de plus de 50 employés.
Francopresse – Une nouvelle plateforme d’information pour les parents francophones
Constatant un manque de ressources en français pour les familles en milieu minoritaire, une chercheuse en psychologie expérimentale de l’Université d’Ottawa a lancé en juin dernier la plateforme ÉducoFamille. Audrey-Ann Deneault espère ainsi favoriser la diffusion des recherches scientifiques auprès du grand public, notamment les pères et les parents d’enfants plus âgés. Traitant de thèmes comme le favoritisme parental, l’importance de la relation d’attachement ou encore le fait d’élever un enfant bilingue, ÉducoFamille est avant tout un moyen pour Audrey-Ann Deneault de transmettre ses découvertes.
Radio-Canada – Les établissements de santé québécois veulent recruter 1700 infirmières à l’étranger
Le réseau de la santé cherche à recruter un nombre inédit d’infirmières à l’étranger. Des séances de recrutement en Europe sont prévues jusqu’au mois de juin afin d’attirer au Québec au moins 1700 infirmières et plus de 200 préposés aux bénéficiaires. C’est cinq fois plus qu’il y a deux ans. Jusqu’à l’automne 2020, le CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal n’avait pas l’habitude de recruter autant de personnel infirmier à l’étranger.
Bloomberg – Canada to Fall Short of 2021 Immigration Target, RBC Says
Canada will fail to hit immigration targets for a second straight year as border restrictions remain in place, according to one of the nation’s top banks. The country will probably welcome closer to 275,000 new permanent residents this year, versus a target of 401,000, Royal Bank of Canada economist Andrew Agopsowicz said in a report Tuesday. Last year, Canadian immigration dropped by almost half to 184,370, its lowest levels in more than two decades.
