CTV News – Canada Defends Refugee Pact with United States in Appeal Hearing

Judges peppered a federal lawyer with questions Tuesday as the Canadian government argued a refugee pact between Ottawa and Washington is consistent with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Canada’s lawyers contend the Federal Court misinterpreted the law when it declared in July that the Safe Third Country Agreement breaches constitutional guarantees of life, liberty and security.

CTV News – Migrant Detainee Goes on Hunger Strike in Laval Holding Centre, Claiming Poor Treatment Amid Outbreak

Community groups are calling for the release of migrants detained at the Immigration Holding Centre in Laval, which they say is in the midst of an outbreak of COVID-19. Conditions now at the centre have pushed one detainee to initiate an indefinite hunger strike, he said. “I believe that our lives are at risk because we do not have any way of protecting ourselves,” reads a letter from the striking detainee, writing under the fake name of Marlon.

Chronicle Herald – Canada Appears in Court Defending Pact with U.S. to Turn Back Asylum-Seekers

A federal court judge made “palpable and overriding” errors when she found a Canada-U.S. agreement to turn back asylum-seekers violated individuals’ right to life, liberty and security of the person, a government lawyer argued Tuesday. The Canadian government returned to court for a two-day hearing to defend the Safe Third Country Agreement after the pact was found unlawful last year.

Toronto Star – New Tool Could Point Immigrants to Spot in Canada Where They’re Most Likely to Succeed

A two-year-old research project between the federal government and Stanford University’s Immigration Policy Lab is offering hope for a tool that might someday point skilled immigrants toward the community in which they’d most likely flourish and enjoy the greatest economic success. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is eyeing a pilot program to test a matching algorithm that would make recommendations as to where a new immigrant might settle, department spokesperson Remi Lariviere told the Star.
