CIC News – Visitors Have More Time to Apply for Work Permits Within Canada

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) originally introduced the measure between August 24, 2020, and March 31, 2021. Foreign nationals in Canada on visitor status will now be able to benefit from the temporary policy until August 31, 2021, according to an IRCC media release. The eligibility criteria have been modified to allow any visitor who has a valid job offer to apply for an employer-specific work permit, regardless of the date they arrived in Canada.

CBC News – Helping International Students Feel at Home in Cape Breton

The division of New Dawn Enterprises is encouraging international students and their families to make the island their home. About two years after launching a pilot, the centre’s international student support and integration program was recently awarded $600,000 from the federal government to continue its work to support settlement and retention. Officials say the money from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency will provide help for up to 800 students the first year, and scale up in years two and three.

Toronto Star – Nanny State? Hardly. Canada Has Left Its Foreign Caregivers in a Stalled System That’s Derailing Lives, Critics Say

The system that is supposed to help foreign nannies and care workers build a new life in Canada is, simply put, a hot mess. That’s the conclusion of caregivers, their advocates and their lawyers, two years after reforms were brought in by the federal Liberal government. Until this past November, over an 18-month period, not a single work permit was issued under two new pilot programs. Meanwhile, there’s a backlog of at least 9,100 applications for permanent residence.

CBC News – 2 Families Who Shared Room for Year After Fleeing Syria Hope to Reunite in N.B.

When Mohamad and Latifa El Daher arrived in Saint John in 2016 with their three children, all they had with them was contained in a few plastic shopping bags. They had spent the previous few years as refugees near Beirut after fleeing the war in Syria. “Before the war it was a beautiful country and I had a beautiful life there,” Latifa said. “But when the war started, it became a very difficult life, not safe, for kids, for everyone.”
