While the collection of these data has been heralded, it may be too late into the pandemic to enact the policy changes required to correct that overrepresentation.

A man who walked into Quebec to seek asylum is set to be deported on Monday to what his lawyer calls “just about certain death,” at the hands of his own father. Samer, a 33-year-old man originally from Jordan, tried to apply for refugee status on the grounds that he’s bisexual. In a letter his lawyer says was filed at the Immigration and Refugee Board hearing, Samer’s relatives describe how he has “shamed the family,” and detailed how they’ll kill him if he returns home: by burning him or throwing him off a building.

Thirty-three-year-old Samer came to Canada in the spring of 2019 through the irregular border crossing at Roxham Road. Samer was denied status almost immediately because he has a criminal record in the U.S after a car accident that killed his best friend when he was 18-years-old. Now, facing deportation on Monday, Samer says if he is deported back to Jordan his family will kill him for being bisexual.

The family of Amal Alshteiwi has launched a lawsuit against the Calgary Board of Education, asking for $457,000 in damages and costs following the tragic death of their daughter in 2019. The family came to Calgary from a refugee camp in Jordan after fleeing war in Syria in 2013. Her mother, Nasra Abdulrahman, says Amal was bullied every day, usually coming home in tears and was suffering badly as a result. She says Amal was taunted relentlessly about everything from her appearance to her academic performance, her accent and even her hijab.

Tout en soulignant l’importance d’apprendre la langue, ils exposent les conséquences désastreuses tant sur la vie des migrants temporaires que sur la capacité des entreprises à maintenir leurs activités. Pour se qualifier au Programme de l’expérience québécoise, un travailleur temporaire doit en effet décrocher le niveau 7, sur un total de 12 niveaux possibles, dans l’échelle québécoise des niveaux de compétence du ministère de l’Immigration.
