The Guardian – More Than 140 Refugees in Australian Detention Set to Be Resettled in Canada Under Sponsorship Scheme

Almost 150 refugees held within Australia’s offshore processing system in Papua New Guinea and Nauru, or in onshore detention, are in the last stages of approval for resettlement in Canada. The non-profit migrant and refugee settlement service Mosaic, based in Vancouver, said it had successfully submitted applications on behalf of 66 people in PNG and Nauru, a further 78 in onshore detention, and 98 family members in third countries. All 242 applications have passed initial approval in Ottawa.

CBC News – Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program Hampered by Pandemic

COVID-19 has slowed down attempts to bring more immigrants to live in northern Ontario. The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot program launched two years ago with the hope of matching 250 newcomers with employers in the north. So far in Sudbury, they’ve only placed 39 workers. Alex Ross, the business development officer for the program in Greater Sudbury, says the pandemic has caused delays.

Forbes – Canada-U.S. Border Restrictions Extended Until at Least June 21

Prime Minister Trudeau has announced that the border closure between Canada and the United States will remain in place until at least until June 21, 2021, and more extensions may be forthcoming. The border will continue to be closed to all non-essential travel. Essential travel will continue to be allowed, and includes trade shipments, essential workers and approved temporary foreign workers.

Le Quotidien – Le développement d’un réseau social, le secret d’une bonne intégration

Il s’agit là de l’une des conclusions tirées par les participantes au panel de discussion virtuel organisé mardi par l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), dans le cadre du lancement de son Plan d’action institutionnel en matière d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion. Pour l’occasion, l’institution a organisé jusqu’au 21 mai la première édition de la Semaine de la valorisation de la diversité avec la tenue de conférences, de formations et des témoignages.

ICI Manitoba – Le nombre de nouveaux citoyens canadiens a chuté de 80% en 2020

La pandémie de COVID-19 a fortement ralenti l’obtention de la citoyenneté canadienne. En 2020-2021, 57 500 personnes sont devenues des citoyens canadiens, soit une chute de près de 80 % par rapport à l’année précédente. Au Manitoba par exemple, 3468 nouveaux arrivants sont devenus citoyens canadiens en 2020-2021. Cela représente une baisse d’environ 65 % par rapport à l’année précédente, où 9931 personnes avaient obtenu leur citoyenneté.

CBC News – Permanent Residency Program for Families of UIA Flight 752 Victims Excludes International Students

The wife of a University of Waterloo international student who was killed in a plane was shot down in Iran in January 2020 says Canada’s program that allows family members of victims to obtain permanent residency isn’t inclusive enough. Mansour Esnaashary Esfahani, who was working on a PhD in civil engineering, was aboard Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 heading to Kyiv when it went down shortly after takeoff from Tehran.
