CBC News – Pandemic Likely to Drive a Surge in Immigration Fraud, Border Agency Warns

The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to drive an increase in immigration fraud and human smuggling as desperate migrants try to get into Canada, says a strategic intelligence report prepared by the Canada Border Service Agency. The report warns that economic downturns and increased poverty abroad caused by the pandemic will prompt more people to resort to irregular methods to come to Canada.

CityNews – Action to Save Montreal’s Chinatown Needs to Come Faster, Advocates Say

Hotels and luxury condos have sprung up around the ornate red and gold gate that marks the south entrance to Montreal’s Chinatown, towering above the busy dumpling restaurants and mom-and-pop stores. The threats of development and gentrification have prompted a recent wave of concern from politicians, but advocates say the action may not be coming fast enough to preserve a neighbourhood that has been historically ignored and further undermined by the COVID-19 pandemic.

CBC News – The Number of Misconduct Investigations of Border Officers Soared Last Year

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says it conducted 215 “founded” investigations of its officers last year, up from 171 in 2019. (The CBSA says it considers a complaint “founded” if “aspects” of it are found to be “valid.”) The increase came after border restrictions imposed to control the pandemic caused a massive decrease in travel to and from Canada. Last year, the total number of recorded trips in and out of the country by air and land was just more than 25 million — a far cry from the nearly 94 million trips logged in 2019.

Toronto Star – Canada Trumpeted Its Special, One-Time Immigration Program for International Grads and Essential Workers. But Did It Work in the End?

Has Ottawa’s latest immigration pathway for international graduates and essential migrant workers been a success or a missed opportunity? After much fanfare in April to announce the first-come, first-served program to grant permanent residence to temporary migrants in Canada, officials released details about the process and requirements less than 24 hours before applications opened a month ago on May 6.
