Globe and Mail – Why the Latin American Community in Toronto Has Been Hit Hard by COVID-19

In a pandemic that has hit marginalized people hardest, Latin Americans in Canada’s largest urban area have been particularly at risk: They’re more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than any other ethnoracial group, according to the most recent data available from the city of Toronto. They work front-line jobs, live in often crowded homes, use public transit and are often reluctant to seek out care – possibly because of precarious immigration status, advocates say.

Losing hope in Canada’s backlogged immigration system, an Ottawa mom is planning to board a flight this week to reunite with her three children stuck in Gaza. “It’s hard to take because I don’t want to leave Canada. I feel like I want my kids to be here,” said Jihan Qunoo, who fled Gaza in 2019 after being a target of threats by the Hamas government due to her work with a non-profit. “At the same time, I feel like every hour I am losing my kids.”

CBC News – Island Refugee-Sponsorship Group to Bring Family of 9 to Canada

Issack Aden says he owes his life to his older sister. Now, he’s hoping to repay that debt, by bringing her family to Canada with help from local volunteers on P.E.I. Aden’s parents were killed in civil war in Somalia 30 years ago. He and his orphaned siblings fled to a refugee camp in Kenya. His older sister, Muslima Hassam, just 12 at the time, quit school to help raise Aden and his younger brother. Aden came to Prince Edward Island in 2011. Muslima, her husband and children remain to this day in Dadaab, the world’s largest refugee camp.
