Global News – Advocates Call for Stronger Migrant Workers Rights Amid Deaths on the Job in Canada
According to Syed Hussan, executive director of the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, there hasn’t been a national assessment on the number of migrant workers who have died on the job in Canada. However, in the shadow of the pandemic, these deaths and the rights of migrants have found their way to public discussions. Hussan said in 2021 alone, there have been at least 10 migrant workers who died of various causes on farms.

Assembly of First Nations Alberta regional chief Marlene Poitras hopes newcomers to Canada will learn more about Indigenous history and culture once the federal government updates its citizenship guide. The 68-page document, Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship, prepares newcomers for the citizenship test. It has not been updated since 2012. In its 93rd call to action, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission called for revising the guide and citizenship test to “reflect a more inclusive history,” including material about treaties and residential schools.
Al Jazeera – Thousands March in Support of Muslim Family Killed in Canada
Thousands of people have marched in support of a Canadian Muslim family run over and killed by a man driving a pick-up truck last Sunday in an attack the police described as a hate crime. The four victims, spanning three generations, were killed when Nathaniel Veltman, 20, ran into them while they were out for an evening walk near their home. A fifth family member, a nine-year-old boy, survived.
CBC News – Increased Immigration in Western P.E.I Brings School Staffing Challenges
Education officials on Prince Edward Island say there has been a significant increase in the number of newcomer students in classrooms in western P.E.I., and many require extra language training. Five years ago, there were about 100 newcomers in schools from Summerside to Tignish — that has grown to about 300 for the 2020-21 school year.
