CBC News – Episodes of Racism, Harassment, Homophobia Recorded at Border Crossing

An investigation of operations at one of the Canada Border Service Agency’s busiest ports of entry  found instances of harassment, racism and homophobia, according to documents shared with CBC News. The third-party review looked at the CBSA’s Cornwall, Ont. office, which crosses into New York state and Akwesasne  — a Mohawk Nation territory which encompasses islands in the St. Lawrence River and straddles the Canada-U.S. border.

CBC News – Citizenship Oath Sworn by New Canadians Now Recognizes Indigenous Rights

New Canadians are now swearing a revised oath of citizenship that recognizes Indigenous rights, but are still studying the old citizenship guide that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission also recommended be revised. Bill C-8, which amended the wording of the oath in the Citizenship Act, received royal assent and became law on June 21. The next day, 31 new Canadians swore the new oath at a citizenship ceremony presided over by Suzanne Carrière, the first Métis citizenship judge in Canada.

Ottawa Citizen – Ottawa’s Chinese Families Called for Project Seeking Immigration Certificates to Mark Canada’s Mistreatment of Chinese Newcomers

A nation-wide hunt for historic Chinese immigration identity documents hopes that longstanding Chinese families in Ottawa will be able to contribute. “We invite people in the Ottawa area to contact us if they have any of the certificates we are looking for,” said Catherine Clement, curator of the project. Tens of thousands of the documents were issued between 1885 and 1924. Clement’s project hopes to include the so-called C.I. certificates in an exhibition and archive next year that will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act.

Windsor Star – New Partnership Virtually Connects Newcomers to Doctors, Health Care

A new local partnership between the UHC — Hub of Opportunities and a local virtual health care platform is designed to expand access to primary care for newcomers to Canada and other people without doctors in Windsor and Essex County. On Monday, the UHC — formerly known as the Unemployed Help Centre — introduced its partnership with ONRx, a virtual health care tool that allows people to sign in to a walk-in clinic, book an appointment and see a doctor virtually.

CBC News – New Legal Clinic to Provide Immigration and Refugee Law Services

Starting this fall, a new legal clinic in Thunder Bay will provide free immigration and refugee law services. The Newcomer Legal Clinic, which received $100,000 in funding from the Law Foundation of Ontario’s Access to Justice Fund, is a joint initiative between Lakehead University’s Bora Laskin Faculty of Law and the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association. Eligible immigrants, temporary residents, refugees and people without status living in northwestern Ontario will be able to access services.

La Presse – De nombreux obstacles attendent les étudiants étrangers

Les étudiants étrangers seront confrontés à divers obstacles lorsque les cours reprendront cet automne. Parmi ceux-ci figurent le retard dans l’octroi des visas, l’accès à un vaccin, les mesures de quarantaine et la moins grande disponibilité des vols. Si le ministère fédéral de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté dit vouloir approuver les demandes de permis d’études d’ici le 6 août. Cependant, l’examen de certaines demandes peut prendre plus de temps quand celles-ci sont incomplètes, prévient une porte-parole, Nancy Caron.
