Mamadou Konaté tended to and cleaned the rooms of elderly patients in the Montreal area who had tested positive for COVID-19. He caught the disease in late April 2020 while doing so. But even though the province brokered a deal with the federal government to guarantee residency for many of the asylum seekers who laboured in Quebec’s beleaguered long-term care homes, Konaté faces deportation as soon as flights to Ivory Coast are once again allowed.

The Association for New Canadians (ANC) and Tony Fang want to learn about immigrants’ and newcomers’ experiences working in the province — why people are staying in their jobs, why people aren’t and what supports could help newcomers remain and thrive as employees in Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s a timely moment for connecting with newcomer employees, as the provincial government announced nearly $8 million in funding last month to attract more than 5,000 newcomers a year over the next five years.

Mohamed Eldaher and his wife came to Canada as refugees from Syria in 2016. He was offered a few acres of land northeast of Calgary from a friend and started a business growing and selling specialty organic vegetables. Each year, he donates a portion of his crops to the Calgary Food Bank. But on Saturday, Eldaher found that someone broke the gate at his farm and drove over his crops. They did not not drive them over just once, he said. Tire tracks show that someone drove in circles, crushing his hard work.
