Global News – Lack of Affordable Housing Biggest Barrier to Resettling Refugees in Winnipeg: Report

A lack of quality affordable housing is making life difficult for former refugees who are trying to make Winnipeg home, according to a new report. The Manitoba branch of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) recently released the results of a study that began in 2015 and relied on 21 former refugees who had resettled in the city. Although it also describes other challenges surrounding education and child care, at the core are barriers to housing and the programs that are supposed to make living affordable.

CBC News – Province Offers Funding to Help Internationally Trained Nurses Get Manitoba Certification

The Manitoba government has announced plans to speed up the process of getting internationally educated nurses into the workforce. The plan calls for post-secondary institutions in Manitoba to increase the number of nursing education seats from more than 800 currently to around 1,200, over the next few years. The province says it will offer up to $23,000 per person in financial and process supports for internationally educated nurses who want to become licensed to practice here.

CBC News – Former Generals Join Fight to Bring Endangered Afghan Interpreters to Canada

Three distinguished former task force commanders from Canada’s war in Afghanistan have written an urgent appeal to the immigration minister to restart a resettlement program for local interpreters who worked alongside soldiers and diplomats. Retired major-generals Denis Thompson, Dean Milner and Dave Fraser penned an open letter warning Ottawa that up to 115 former translators and their families who are still in the war-ravaged country are in danger following significant gains by the Taliban.

Globe and Mail – Canada Working to Resettle Dozens of Afghan Interpreters and Staff Facing Retaliation from Taliban

Canada, which withdrew its armed forces from Afghanistan seven years ago, has been urged to quickly resettle interpreters and staff because they now face retaliation from the Taliban. The U.S. military left Bagram Airfield, the centre of the U.S’s operations last week, fuelling urgency to resettle Afghans. Other countries that participated in the U.S.-led war against the Taliban are also facing similar calls.
