Toronto Star – They Left the Philippines for Temporary Work. How This Small Manitoba Town Became Home

Chrisie Servanez had been told what to expect of her new home in Canada. It was remote. There would be no public transit. Stores close by 7 p.m. Still, it couldn’t be that bad, thought the migrant worker; it’s Canada, after all — it’s a first-rate, developed country. What would also leave Servanez taken aback was the number of her compatriots in this small community with a population of just 1,700 at the junction of highways 16 and 83 in the picturesque Parkland Region of Manitoba.

CBC News – Permanent Residents in Limbo Waiting to Immigrate to Canada

Aashray Kovi refreshes his email several times a day hoping for good news from Canadian immigration officials. The 28-year-old computer programmer who lives in Bangalore, India, is one of about 23,000 aspiring immigrants with expired or soon-to-be expired documents waiting to enter Canada. “It’s really depressing for all of us,” said Kovi, who plans to settle in Ottawa but can’t travel because his confirmation of permanent residency (COPR) document expired in early June, prior to travel restrictions being lifted.

Three cabinet ministers on Friday described the program to reporters. The announcement comes after weeks in which the government faced increasing pressure to act in order to protect the lives of Afghans whose association with Canada now puts them at risk.

Toronto Star – COVID-19 Hit Racialized and Immigrant Groups in Long-Term Care Hard. A New Report Says Data Is Needed for Change to Happen

Residents and workers in Canada’s long-term-care system have been harmed by the COVID-19 pandemic — and those who are racialized and from immigrant communities likely have been affected most, a new report says. But the lack of demographic data on what these groups face in long-term care makes it difficult to pinpoint how they’ve been impacted, and what their needs are, according to physicians and researchers who authored the report, published Thursday by the Wellesley Institute and the National Institute on Aging.
