Montreal’s Haitian community urged Ottawa on Monday to process immigration files more quickly for Haitians waiting to come to Canada, as its members tried to help their homeland following a deadly earthquake over the weekend. The head of the Montreal-based community organization Maison d’Haïti says Ottawa should quickly approve the applications from people who had already started the immigration process.

National Post – Canada evacuated 34 diplomats, 807 Afghans: Trudeau

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau says 34 Canadian diplomats and Canadian Armed Forces personnel have been evacuated from Afghanistan along with more than 800 Afghans under a special immigration program. Speaking on the campaign trail in Longueuil, Que., Trudeau says Canada is working with its allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom, to help as many Afghans as possible.

Global News – Edmonton Park Named After Immigrant Who Was Once Told to ‘Look More Canadian’ in Job Interview

An immigrant who was once told to “look more Canadian” in a job interview is now being honoured with an Edmonton park in his name. “I feel very proud and very happy,” said 90-year-old former Canadian citizenship court judge Gurcharan Bhatia. Earlier this month, the city named the park in the community of Blue Quill, The Jiti and Gurcharan Bhatia Park.

CBC News – Association of New Canadians Working to Create Welcoming Space for LGBTQ Refugees in N.L.

A new project launched by the Association of New Canadians (ANC) is working to create a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQ immigrants and refugees coming into Newfoundland and Labrador. The ANC’s provincial chapter is working in partnership with the Rainbow Refugees Association of Nova Scotia to create Project Rainbow, which will develop training for staff and orientation sessions for those arriving in the province. The group is also hoping to sponsor five LGBTQ immigrants into the province, with the goal of fundraising $20,000 per person.

Toronto Star – ‘Their Lives Matter.’ Afghan Canadians’ Plea for Help to Save Loved Ones as Kabul Falls to the Taliban

Militants waving Taliban flags entered the capital, the last frontier of the Afghan security forces, and took over the presidential palace Sunday as embattled president Ashraf Ghani fled the country. Despite Canada’s last-ditch effort the past few weeks to resettle Afghan refugees, including interpreters and civilians who worked alongside Canadian forces, Ottawa shut down its embassy in Kabul and suspended diplomatic operations in the country on Sunday.

Le gouvernement fédéral a annoncé de nouveaux efforts pour faire venir 20 000 réfugiés afghans au pays, au moment où les talibans s’apprêtent à reprendre le pouvoir après 20 ans de guerre. Les groupes prioritaires comprennent des femmes, des défenseurs des droits humains, des journalistes, ainsi que les familles d’interprètes déjà réinstallés au Canada. Avant cette annonce, Ottawa s’est fait prier de redoubler d’ardeur pour sauver plusieurs centaines d’interprètes afghans et leur famille au moment où les talibans gagnent du terrain.
