Globe and Mail – Nearly 190 Evacuees Airlifted on First Canadian Flight from Kabul Since Taliban Takeover
A military aircraft has evacuated 188 people out of Kabul on the first Canadian flight since the Taliban took control of the Afghan capital. The CC-177 Globemaster III heavy-lift aircraft took off from Kabul late Thursday and landed in Kuwait Friday. Jessica Lamirande, a spokesperson for the Department of National Defence, said the flight included 175 Afghans and 13 foreign nationals.
CBC News – Once Captured by Taliban, Journalist Says Canada’s Resettlement Promise Is Doomed
Qais Azimy struggles to sleep, managing two or three hours at a time, watching the Taliban sweep over a country he once called home. “I’m worried about the people who are stuck in the country,” he said. “I know what’s gonna happen to them. I went through that a couple of times in life.” Azimy is no stranger to the Taliban, having come face-to-face with its fighters more than once. The Ottawa resident now wants to bring three families and 15 journalists to Canada, but he faces obstacles.
National Post – Canada Would Consider Accepting Afghan Refugees on Behalf of U.S., Allies -Minister
Canada would consider taking in additional Afghan refugees on behalf of the United States or other allies if asked to do so, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said on Friday. “We should keep the door open to all possibilities,” Mendicino said in an interview. “If there were Afghans who had assisted coalition partners during the mission that also met the criteria for our humanitarian resettlement program, I think we should be prepared to consider such an arrangement,” the minister said.
Toronto Star – Are you a new Canadian? Here’s how the federal parties are fighting for your vote
When 33-year-old Lucas Cunha fills out his ballot for Canada’s 44th election, he won’t be doing so by mail. Cunha is set on going to his local polling station; as someone who became a Canadian citizen in early 2020, this is the first time he’ll be able to vote in the country he now calls home. Unlike many Canadians grumbling about heading back to the polls, the Mississauga resident, who arrived in Ontario from Brazil 10 years ago, is thrilled by the prospect. He wants to wait in line, duck behind a screen and mark an “X” beside his preferred candidate, just like everyone else.
