CBC News – Hazara Expats from Afghanistan Grapple with own Trauma While Helping Others Escape

Halima Bahman may be sitting in the safety of her home in the suburbs north of Toronto, but her mind is thousands of kilometres away in Afghanistan, where the Taliban’s renewed grip on power makes her fear the worst for family and friends. Bahman is one of many Afghan expats who have spent the past week fielding phone calls and text messages, trying to help however they can. She is fundraising for those who’ve been displaced, guiding people through the bureaucracy of applying for asylum and translating information.

CBC News – How International Students Heading to Canada Are Navigating Pandemic Travel

After over a year of mostly virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many Canadian colleges and universities are preparing to open their doors for in-person classes this fall. Some international students say they are overcoming huge hurdles to get back to campus amid travel restrictions tied to the pandemic. They say online learning was a necessary solution in the interim but fell short of what they expected from a university experience in Canada.

Global News – ‘Nothing Short of Miraculous’: Immigration Minister Defends Canada-Afghanistan Evacuation

Canada’s minister of immigration says that the country’s current evacuation effort in Afghanistan, which to date totals the rescue of over a thousand refugees, is “nothing short of miraculous” given the current logistical obstacles and Canada’s lack of military presence within the country. Marco Mendicino made the statement during an interview with The West Block’s Mercedes Stephenson on Sunday, after being asked if he was worried that they would not be able to bring home everyone they had promised to by the time the Americans wrap up their evacuation efforts.

CTV News – First 40 Afghan Families Have Left Quarantine in Canada: Immigration Minister

Canadian evacuation flights have pulled more than 1,100 people out of Afghanistan this month, Immigration Minister Marco Mendocino said Sunday, and 40 families evacuated before the Taliban marched into Kabul have now completed their COVID-19 quarantine periods in Canada. Afghan families began arriving in Canada on Aug. 4. Canadian rescue efforts were halted for several days, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has blamed on the Taliban’s presence at the airport in Kabul.
