CBC News – Why Canada Failed to Rescue ‘A Hell of a Lot More’ Afghans, According to Former Generals

The Liberal government could have evacuated many more Afghans from the troubled region had it streamlined its cumbersome bureaucratic process and maintained a stronger military and diplomatic presence, former top Canadian military commanders and experts say. While the Canadian government was able to evacuate more than 3,700 people from Kabul, the number should have been “a hell of a lot more,” said retired major-general David Fraser, who commanded more than 2,000 NATO coalition troops during Operation Medusa in the Afghan province of Kandahar in 2006.

Global News – ‘Don’t Lose Hope’: Canada Secures 500 Seats on U.S. Flight From Kabul, Waives Visa Fees

The Canadian government announced Friday it secured 500 seats on a U.S. flight for Afghan refugees trying to leave the Taliban-run country. Speaking at an official update, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino told reporters Canada is continuing to work with allies to get citizens and refugees out, despite its military evacuation operation ending. As part of Canada’s efforts to accelerate evacuations, Mendicino said the government will also bring in a “temporary public policy” measure to waive fees for immigration documents for Afghans.

CTV News – After Daring Escape, Afghan Interpreter Desperate to Bring Rest of Family to Canada

Hujat, who worked as an interpreter for the Canadian Armed Forces, moved to Canada years ago but had been in his homeland since February to care for his family and marry his longtime fiancée. On Aug. 15, the day Kabul fell to the Taliban, he was at the airport for a scheduled flight. He called his family, and they urged him to leave the country. He then saw people running for their lives, and so he began to run, too, while waving his Canadian passport.

CTV News – For Afghanistan Evacuees, New Challenges Await in Canada

All told, Canada had evacuated some 3,700 people out of Kabul by the time the final flight lifted off on Thursday, many of them Afghans to be resettled in Canada under a special immigration program that prioritizes those who assisted Canada’s efforts in Afghanistan. While escaping from Kabul may signal relief from immediate danger, Afghans hoping to resettle in Canada face their own set of challenges, from finding housing and perhaps learning a new language, to processing the ordeal they have just been through, say immigration lawyers.
