Nearly 10,000 Afghans, now out of the Taliban’s reach, are waiting in German refugee camps desperate for their new lives to begin. “We are supposed to be in Canada,” Naeem, who worked as an interpreter for a Canadian-funded project, told CTV National News. He escaped Afghanistan with his wife and six young children in a harrowing journey that lasted days before they were able to fly out of the country at the end of August.

Hussain’s family — 16 people in total, including his brothers, their spouses and children — had been issued a “facilitation letter” for resettlement to Canada. They got a call to show up at the northwest gate of the Kabul airport for an evacuation flight on Aug. 25, the day before Canada ended its military mission in Afghanistan. But amid the whirlwind after the fall of Kabul, they were denied entry at the airport gate, and had no choice but to return yet again to the safe house.

Compte tenu de la crise actuelle en Afghanistan et du succès du Canada en matière de réinstallation des personnes réfugiées, pourquoi le gouvernement fédéral ne réagit-il pas maintenant comme il l’a fait en 2015, lorsque les images d’Alan Kurdi ont galvanisé des millions de Canadiennes et de Canadiens ?
