New York Times – Canada Doubles Its Afghan Refugee Resettlement Target to 40,000 People

Canada has doubled to 40,000 the number of Afghans fleeing the Taliban that it plans to take in, the Canadian foreign minister said Monday, fulfilling a campaign pledge made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The announcement, which came a week after Mr. Trudeau’s party won re-election, was certain to be welcomed by humanitarian groups in Canada. They had been pressing the government to do significantly more when it initially committed last month to take in 20,000 refugees after the Taliban swept into power.

London Free Press – I Am London: Online Drive Uses Newcomers’ Success Stories to Bust Myths

A social media push to debunk myths about immigrants kicks offs this month by highlighting the contribution of London-area newcomers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The I am London campaign is an initiative of the London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership, a London-area resettlement agency. It aims to debunk narratives that paint immigrants as taking advantage of the system and inspire other immigrants to pursue their dreams by highlighting other newcomers’ successes, project co-ordinator Huda Hussein said.

CBC News – Fredericton Housing Crisis Leaves Some Newcomers Living in Wretched Conditions

Hamadi Hamisi and his family spent 10 years trying to survive on meagre rations in a refugee camp in Kenya, living in a mud house with a bamboo roof. This year in Fredericton, as newly arrived refugees looking for a place to live, they stood in a dark, dank basement apartment, where mould grew on the walls, there was no proper ventilation, and the single, tiny window in one of the three bedrooms was broken. But the resettlement agent helping the couple had warned they would have to find a place on their own if they didn’t take this one.

CBC News – I feel like the biggest loser when someone says, ‘Wow, your English is so good!’

There’s this thing I do when I’m walking down the street with my partner. When someone crosses our path, I’ll say something in perfect, crisp English, loud enough for that stranger to hear. I do it to offer myself just a little bit of protection as if to say, ‘Please don’t say anything racist to me. Look how well I played the game. I speak this language perfectly, without an accent — I swear, I’m one of you.’

CBC News – Immigrant Nurses in B.C. Say Language Proficiency Tests a Barrier to Practice

Anne Ignacio and her parents, all internationally educated nurses (IENs), immigrated to Canada from the Philippines almost a decade ago with hopes of continuing to work in their profession. But after multiple attempts at passing the English proficiency exam, she said they had to make the difficult decision to switch careers. “The required scores for the English exams, I find it ridiculous,” Ignacio said. “They require an overall score … and they also require you to meet a certain score for each category.”
