CTV News – Refugee, Undocumented Health-Care Workers Demand Access to Permanent Resident Program

The temporary resident to permanent resident pathway program was announced in April as a way to keep skilled essential workers in the country, with a focus on retaining 20,000 hospital and long-term care workers. While the government has already received the maximum number of applications for recent university graduates and other essential workers, there have been few applicants accepted to the health-care stream. The program is set to close on Nov. 5 and has so far accepted only 5,421 applications.

Beacon Herald – Door Opens to Chatham-Kent’s Agricultural Workers

There has been broad praise for changes to Canada’s immigration policy announced earlier this year that provide a path to permanent residency for temporary foreign workers – including agricultural workers. In Chatham-Kent, workers the Caribbean, Latin America and other countries are essential to agriculture. Without their efforts, the great diversity of agriculture in the municipality would not be possible.

Toronto Star – Premier Ford Declines to Apologize for Comments About Immigrants

Ontario Premier Doug Ford would not apologize Tuesday for comments about immigrants that some called “callous” and “xenophobic,” raising concerns that he was feeding negative stereotypes about newcomers. While talking about a shortage of workers in the province a day earlier, Ford said people who want to come and work their “tail off” like every other new Canadian has done should come to Ontario, but those who want to “collect the dole and sit around” should go elsewhere.
