CTV News – Canadian Citizens Will Be Able to Sponsor Fleeing North Koreans for the First Time
Canadians will be able to sponsor people fleeing North Korea under a new program to help refugees escaping Kim Jong Un’s authoritarian regime, according to a Toronto-based human rights organization. HanVoice says a pilot program being launched next February will allow Canadian citizens to sponsor women and children who have fled to a neighbouring country, such as Thailand. The U.S., South Korea and Canada currently accept North Korean refugees. North Koreans who head to China are sent back if caught, while those who make it to Thailand have no official status.

A former intensive-care nurse in the Philippines, Katrina Deauna has watched from the sidelines as Ontario — and all of Canada — struggles with chronic nursing shortages laid bare by the pandemic. While the foreign caregiver enjoys looking after the 18-month-old baby girl and six-year-old son of her Canadian employer, she says, she would rather use her front-line nursing skills and experience to help those fighting for their lives against COVID-19.

Basketball phenom Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir says she’s “humbled” by the support she’s received since CBC reported she’s been denied permanent residency in Canada and must return to the U.S. Abdul-Qaadir has made it her life’s work to help Muslim girls through sport. Last Thursday, she received a letter from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that said she doesn’t “meet the requirements” to stay in Canada with her husband and young son. “The support has been amazing. I’m truly humbled,” Abdul-Qaadir said Tuesday.
CBC News – Government Data Breach Exposes Afghans to More Danger
The names of several hundred vulnerable Afghans seeking refuge from the Taliban were recently leaked in emails sent in error by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The Afghans in question fear reprisals from the Taliban, who took over the country in August. Some are in hiding because of past roles in the Afghan government, armed forces, judiciary, or as human rights or women’s rights activists. One email seen by CBC News listed 200 names. Not only did names and emails appear but also, in some cases, faces could be seen.
