The Ontario government has proposed legislation it says would help remove barriers for skilled newcomers looking to get licensed in certain regulated professions. Dave Thomas, the connector manager for the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre’s WR Connectors program, says this is a good first step in recognizing the value of skilled immigrants. “I think we have maybe stumbled a bit in our ability to really appreciate the value of the skills and training and experience that people bring from abroad,” Thomas said in an interview.
Reuters – Canada Defends Pandemic Policy on Asylum-Seekers While Letting More Enter Through Exemptions
The Canadian government is trying to quash a legal challenge to its policy of turning back asylum-seekers entering the country between border crossings, saying the group bringing it lacks standing, even as it has granted a growing number of exemptions to the policy. The parties were in court on Thursday arguing over who should be able to bring a case in the public interest.

The Afghan ambassador is urging Canada to send officials to Pakistan and other countries bordering Afghanistan to help “accelerate” the passage of refugees fleeing the Taliban. In an interview with The Canadian Press, Hassan Soroosh, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Canada, said there was an urgent need to “expedite” the exodus, particularly of those at risk of Taliban persecution.

In a gritty industrial area of Cambridge, Ontario, an unusual protest was staged outside the Al-Madina Halal Meat Shop. More than 40 protestors armed with banners and a loudspeaker distributed leaflets in an attempt to shame the business owners into settling their debts with a former employee. The protestors, with the Naujawan Support Network, were there to demand payment of more than $8,000 in alleged unpaid wages to Rohit Uppal, a butcher at the shop.
Globe and Mail – Ottawa Sees Few Claims for Residency Under Agri-Food Pilot
Ottawa has received only a fraction of the applications it was expecting for a pilot program that would give a pathway to permanent residency for temporary foreign workers in some year-round agricultural industries. The Agri-Food Pilot, which opened in May, 2020, was expected to welcome 2,750 migrant workers per year over three years, but the Immigration department says it only received a total of 343 applications that were complete as of Aug. 31 this year.
