Gomez came to the country from Bogotá, Colombia, almost five years ago as part of a Grade 12 exchange student program in New Brunswick. When her plane landed, she immediately found herself in a place she didn’t know a lot about. She created a YouTube channel named Una Colombiana en Canada (A Colombian woman in Canada) and started posting videos where she talks about things Latin Americans may want to know before they migrate to the region.

The Guardian – Quebec’s Narrow Asylum Laws Deny Frontline Workers Resident Status

Advocates are calling on Quebec premier François Legault, whose government heavily influenced the constraints on the Guardian Angels program, to extend it to all asylum seekers working on the frontline during the pandemic. The province’s unique constitutional relationship with Canada means that Quebec decides who’s eligible for immigration, which is driven by a desire to protect its culture and the French language.

Toronto Star – Who Is ‘Essential’? Immigrants and Foreign Workers Overrepresented in Designated Jobs During COVID-19, a New Report Finds

Although immigrants only account for 23.8 per cent of the Canadian workforce, they are “overrepresented” in major essential jobs: transit and passenger transportation (39.7 per cent); food manufacturing (34.85 per cent); administrative and support services (29.84 per cent); truck transportation (29.71 per cent); nursing and residential care facilities (29.21 per cent); personal and laundry services (28.1 per cent); and food services and restaurants (27.43 per cent). Temporary foreign workers are also an increasing source of labour in the farm and food manufacturing subsectors.

CTV News – Canadian LGBTQ2S+ Organization Rainbow Railroad Assists 29 in Fleeing Afghanistan

Canadian charity organization Rainbow Railroad says it has helped co-ordinate an airlift of 29 LGBTQ2S+ Afghans out of Afghanistan in a humanitarian mission. Rainbow Railroad is a LGBTQ2S+ organization that provides pathways to safety for persecuted members of the queer community all over the world. They are well known for being instrumental in helping several LGBTQ2s+ people escape from a brutal crackdown in Chechnya in 2017.

Global News – Inquest Ordered into Death of Immigration Detainee at Peterborough Regional Health Centre in 2015

A coroner’s inquest has been scheduled into the death of an immigration detainee who died while in hospital in Peterborough, Ont., in 2015, the province announced Friday. Abdurahman Hassan, 39, died in a hospital room at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on June 11, 2015, after being transferred from the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay. In July 2016, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit released details of Hassan’s death, noting he had been held for deportation to Somalia for over three years.
