Financial Post – Canada Surpasses Record Immigration Goal of 401,000 Permanent Residents in 2021

On Thursday, the federal government announced the milestone, adding that the record immigration flows were attained despite the ongoing pandemic, which prompted the country to close its borders to foreigners for much of the year. Because of the closed borders, Canada last year had switched immigration strategies, targeting those temporary residents already in the country, like international students and foreign workers, and converting them to permanent residency.

CBC News – COVID-19 Might Have Lasting Impacts on the Way Canada Handles Immigration, Minister Says

During the pandemic, as it became more and more difficult to bring people to Canada from abroad, the government turned to people already in the country to meet its immigration targets. While some of the new permanent residents this year have been immigrants and refugees who arrived in Canada through traditional means, the federal government focused on allowing temporary residents to make the country their permanent home.

Global News – Canadians Helping Afghan Refugees Frustrated by Private Sponsorship Programs

Refugees can be brought to Canada by the government or through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program, which allows citizens, permanent residents and certain organizations to sponsor newcomers provided they can support the refugees with the funds needed to start a life here. But private citizens cannot sponsor those who do not have United Nations refugee status in the countries they are coming from, and organizations that sponsor refugees – called sponsorship agreement holders – have caps on how many newcomers they can bring over.

In late March, the 33-year-old Toronto man went to his family doctor and did a routine blood test. His red blood cells and hemoglobin count were so low that he was referred to the hospital emergency room immediately. The software developer, originally from India, was later diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, which required weekly blood transfusions, before a perfect match could be identified for a bone-marrow transplant.

CBC News – P.E.I. Looking Closely at Ontario Foreign Accreditation Changes

P.E.I. is taking a close look at what other jurisdictions are doing to make it easier for foreign-trained professionals to join the Canadian workforce. Last month, the Ontario government passed legislation that would remove barriers to the recognition of foreign credentials for some regulated professions such as engineers, teachers and accountants. The bill will make it so Canadian work experience is no longer required for these jobs.
