A group in London, Ont. is urging the federal government to allow a refugee family from Syria to relocate to help their critically ill child. Ezzeddin and Midia Alahmad are parents to one-year-old Tim, who lives with epidermolysis bullosa, commonly known as butterfly syndrome. The family has been living in Beirut, Lebanon, since fleeing the war in Syria, and are currently in an abandoned house with no electricity and limited access to water.

Maria Sauco and her husband, both empty-nesters, left Alberta in 2019 for a peaceful life in rural New Brunswick. Then the pandemic hit, and Sauco felt a yearning to return to bedside nursing care. But Sauco said the province made it too expensive and too difficult to get accredited as a nurse who could practice in New Brunswick. It would have cost $460 to register with the Nursing Association of New Brunswick and $650 US to apply for the National Nursing Assessment Service. The process can take as long as two years.

Plus d’un millier d’infirmières – fortement courtisées par le Québec, particulièrement depuis le début de la pandémie – ont été recrutées à l’étranger depuis 2019. Même en pleine pandémie, les infirmiers français interrogés (qui forment le plus gros contingent) sont globalement ravis. Le « temps supplémentaire obligatoire » (TSO) est certes un facteur irritant majeur pour ceux qui doivent en faire, mais ils sont contents d’avoir beaucoup moins de patients à leur charge. Ils sont aussi mieux payés et, expliquent-ils, la philosophie de soins est à la hauteur de l’excellente réputation du Québec en France à cet égard.

David Lee, un investisseur qui vit au Texas, a aidé un groupe d’Afghans bloqués à se rendre à la frontière pakistanaise après la prise de contrôle par les talibans en août dernier. Les Hazaras, qui sont arrivés à Calgary plus tôt cette semaine, incluaient des cinéastes, des membres de la communauté artistique afghane et des militants des droits de la personne. M. Lee, qui avait auparavant financé la fuite d’un groupe de 38 Hazaras vers le Pakistan, ainsi que des envois de nourriture vers l’Afghanistan, a été contacté par un Afghan d’une organisation humanitaire aux États-Unis pour savoir s’il pouvait apporter une aide urgente.

A YouTuber who gives investment tips helped fund the escape of 170 Afghans from the Taliban to Canada. David Lee, an investor who lives in Texas, helped a large group of stranded Afghans get to the Pakistan border after the Taliban took control last August. The Hazaras, who arrived in Calgary earlier this week, included filmmakers, members of Afghanistan’s artistic community and human-rights activists.

“As the mosaic population of Manitoba is changing, there is a great need to also change the way we offer services… which is not done at this time,” said Zita Somakoko, who heads the advocacy group Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence. Despite the importance of shelters — the primary gateway for resources for women escaping domestic abuse —Somakoko says some immigrant and refugee women have stopped reaching out to Manitoba shelters, because they fear they will experience “second-hand victimization” when they do.
