Quatre personnes, dont un bébé, sont mortes au Manitoba en tentant de traverser la frontière avec les États-Unis, selon la Gendarmerie royale du Canada. Les policiers croient que les victimes sont mortes de froid. Pour l’instant, la police fédérale ignore l’âge exact et la nationalité des victimes, ainsi que la raison pour laquelle elles tentaient de traverser la frontière. Les victimes auraient été confrontées à des champs à perte de vue dans la noirceur totale avec d’importantes accumulations de neige carrément impassables à pied.
Global News – Man Charged After Four People Found Dead Near Canada-U.S. Border in Manitoba
Manitoba RCMP say the bodies of four people — two adults, a teen and an infant — were found on the Canadian side of the U.S./Canada border near Emerson on Wednesday. Jane MacLatchy, Manitoba’s commanding officer, said all four were located within 9-12 metres of the border. Police are referring to them as victims, as there are concerns the group’s attempted border crossing was facilitated in some way, and that they were left out in the extreme cold.
CBC News – Migrant Worker from Jamaica Dies in COVID-19 Isolation in Ontario While Waiting to Start Work
A temporary foreign worker who recently arrived in Ontario from Jamaica has died while in isolation for COVID-19. The man was in his 40s, according to Joe Sbrocchi, general manager of Ontario Greenhouse and Vegetable Growers. The man came to the province earlier this month and had been in an isolation centre in Essex County in southwestern Ontario. He died sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, days before his isolation was set to finish.

Rukhshana Ahmidi, 22, worked as an interpreter for a Canadian doctor in Afghanistan and was able to escape the country on Aug. 15, the same day a suicide bombing hit the airport in Kabul. Amid the confusion and chaos at the airport, Ahmidibecame separated from her family and eventually made it onto a flight, but without an update on the status of her loved ones. Ahmidi, who now lives outside Toronto, only found out after landing in Kuwait that her family did not make it out of Afghanistan.
CBC News – Latest Data on P.E.I. Immigrant Retention Rate Not a Fair Reflection, Province Says
Despite P.E.I. having the country’s lowest immigrant-retention rate in a five-year study, the province says the data is a poor reflection of the number of immigrants coming and staying over the past two years. According to Statistics Canada, 28 per cent of immigrants are still on the Island five years after coming to Canada. Ontario and Alberta are around 90 per cent. The StatCan data is based on immigrant admission from 2014, and its database was compiled in 2020. It was last updated December 2021.
