National Post – Canada Pausing Intake of Highly Skilled Immigrant Workers Amid Heavy Backlog

Canada’s immigration system for high-skilled workers is severely backlogged and even amidst a labour shortage, the government is pausing new invitations because the department simply can’t process them quickly enough, according to a briefing document. Immigration lawyer Steven Meurrens obtained the document through access to information and provided it to the National Post. In the memo, department officials outline that “an estimated 76,000” applicants are in the inventory for federal high-skilled worker applications, which is more than what the government needs to meet targets all the way out to 2023.

Al Jazeera – Baby Among Four Found Dead Along US-Canada Border

Four people, including an infant, have been found dead in freezing conditions along the United States-Canada border after apparently being abandoned by human smugglers, authorities said. Officials on Thursday said the bodies of two adults and a baby were discovered a day earlier by the US border and about 10km (6 miles) from the town of Emerson in Canada’s central Manitoba province. Police said a fourth person – who appeared to be a teenage boy – was found dead nearby shortly after.

Global News – Ngola Case ‘Definitely Bad PR’ for Immigration, Doctor Recruitment in New Brunswick

The case of a Black doctor who says he was forced to leave New Brunswick after receiving a torrent of racist abuse could impact the province’s ability to attract more immigrants and doctors, observers say. Dr. Jean-Robert Ngola, who is of Congolese descent, says he was threatened with lynchings and told to go back to Africa, among other insults, after he was falsely blamed in public statements for causing a COVID-19 outbreak in Campbellton, N.B., in the early months of the pandemic.

Toronto Star – Are These Two Photos of the Same Person? Canada’s Controversy Over Asylum-Seekers and ‘Photo Matching’

Abdiqani Ibrahim Ali claims he spent all his life in a rural town in Somalia — until his father was gunned down by terrorists. It was on those grounds, more than four years ago, that he was granted asylum in Canada. Now, three years after Ali became a permanent resident, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is alleging he has fabricated his asylum story, and his whole identity. How they’ve come to that determination is prompting allegations that the federal government could be using some form of facial recognition devices as it assesses refugees.
