Près d’une décennie après l’emprisonnement de Raif Badawi en Arabie saoudite, sa femme compte les jours avant sa libération, qui devrait avoir lieu dans un mois, selon elle. De son côté, Amnistie internationale Canada francophone affirme n’avoir eu aucune confirmation que la libération se ferait en février. Le 17 juin 2012, Raif Badawi a été arrêté puis condamné à 10 ans de prison pour avoir publié un blogue discutant des questions sociales en Arabie saoudite. Mme Haidar espère que son mari aura bientôt la citoyenneté canadienne, une source « d’espoir » pour elle.

It’s not known what prompted the group that died near Emerson, Man., nor the seven others who went on ahead to make the perilous journey, but Shimon Segal, a criminal defence and immigration lawyer at the firm of Gindin Segal in Winnipeg, said they might have encountered considerable challenges trying to settle in Canada.

Parmi les options s’offrant à eux, ils pourraient utiliser un recours judiciaire en droit administratif de type mandamus – où le tribunal peut ordonner qu’une décision soit rendue dans leur dossier pour cause de délai déraisonnable.

A bleak panorama of frozen, windblown prairie extends in every direction behind Katy Siemer as she points north, past a barren stand of trees to a pipeline compressor station a few hundred metres away in Manitoba. The U.S. Border Patrol agent is standing alongside a similar facility in Minnesota that she says undocumented migrants use as a meeting spot when sneaking over from Canada, usually under cover of darkness. At the moment, it’s a blindingly bright, sunny day, beautiful in every respect but the –29 C temperature.
