CTV News – Immigration Processing Times to Return to Standard in 2022: Minister

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says the government will get back on track by the end of the year after COVID-19 caused a major backlog in the processing of immigration applications and long waits for people seeking status in Canada. The government last year announced it would spend $85 million to plow through the backlogged applications, which Fraser says will be used mainly to hire more staff.

Globe and Mail – Donated Digital Devices Removes a Major Hurdle for Afghan Newcomers

Not having a computer or a cellphone can be a major barrier for Afghan newcomers to Canada, especially during the pandemic when so much of life, from attending school to accessing social programs, can only be done online. To help those dealing with that barrier, the tech firm First Class Conferencing Facilitation partnered with the Afghan Women’s Organization to collect devices donated from across Ontario.

CBC News – Detainee Dies After Being Held at Immigration Detention Centre in Laval

A detainee who was being held at the immigration detention centre in Laval has died after an ambulance had to be called for them on Friday, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) says. First responders were called after the detainee was found in medical distress, the agency said in a statement Sunday. Employees who were on site provided CPR until paramedics arrived. London Free Press – Immigrants Struggle to Access Canada’s Legal Services: Western University Study

Newcomers arriving in London, and elsewhere in Canada, need better information about legal services — and affordable options to tap into them — to adjust to life in their new land. Those are among the conclusions stemming from a study led by a Western University researcher looking at the legal challenges immigrants face when arriving in Canada. As part of the study, researchers interviewed 21 newcomers in London and Toronto who faced legal challenges about their experiences accessing services and getting support.

Toronto Star – Protesters Rally to Support Egyptians Refused Asylum by Border Officers

Demonstrators gathered at Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino’s constituency office on Saturday to protest what they say is Islamophobia in the Canada Border Services Agency. “We are protesting because we have a group of CBSA officers who are meant to represent the minister of public safety,” said Mostafa Mahmoud, a Toronto representative of the Egyptian Canadian Coalition for Democracy, noting the group believes CBSA agents wrongly denied refugee status to Egyptians based on Islamophobia.
