Global News – Immigrants, Single Parents and Low-Income Earners Get Dinged by Tax System, Study Finds

A new study from the Finance Department suggests that single parents, lower-income households and recent immigrants are more likely to lose more for extra earnings than most other groups of workers. Katherine Scott, a senior economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, says the study lends credence to calls from anti-poverty advocates and businesses for a broad review of the tax system.

National Post – Despite Reduction In High-Skilled Immigrants, Canada Will Still Have The People To Fill Jobs: Minister

Last month, Fraser introduced in Parliament his first levels plan as immigration minister. It proposes having 431,000 people become permanent residents next year, rising to 451,000 by 2024. But in the next two years, the number of immigrants in the federal high-skilled category will be almost half of what the government had previously planned. The government is targeting to bring in 55,900 people in that class, while in October 2020 it forecast it would be bringing in 110,500 people.

CBC News – Northern Policy Institute Research Outlines Need for French-Speaking Migration Targets

A new series of articles from the Northern Policy Institute takes a closer look at French-speaking populations in northern Ontario and outlines targets for how many French-speaking migrants that communities need to attract in the coming years. Mercedes Labelle, a lead policy analyst with the institute and author of the articles, said the population in northern Ontario is aging faster than the rest of the province, and as a result, the working population will decline in the next few years.

Toronto Star – This Province Aims to Embrace a Wave of People Fleeing Ukraine and Not for the First Time

While all of the Prairie provinces have a long history of Ukrainian settlement, perhaps no other province so closely ties its history and identity to Ukraine. It’s why Saskatchewan’s government is now pledging to become the No. 1 destination in Canada for Ukrainians fleeing their country. The province has for years been working to attract more immigrants, but the hope now is that its already-significant Ukrainian population (more than 13 per cent of residents identify as Ukrainian) will help reduce culture shock for new arrivals.

CBC News – ‘There is no time to grieve’: Ukrainian refugees arriving in Warsaw focus on helping each other

Olga Bolshova gestures around a small room in Warsaw crammed with three beds, a table and a small fridge. This is a temporary home for her, her husband Sergei and her daughters Ivannka, 15, and seven-year-old Stephania, who fled Kyiv the day Russia invaded Ukraine.  “We have everything we need,” she said in English with a smile. The room is inside a convent where the high stone walls still bear shrapnel marks from the Second World War bombing. The nuns had a spare guest room and offered it to the family. “The Polish people have been very kind since minute one,” said Olga’s husband Sergei in English.

CBC News – Canada Promised to Bring in 40,000 Afghan Refugees. Only 8,500 Have Arrived

When the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan last fall, the federal government promised to help thousands of Afghans reach safety on Canadian soil. But precious few have managed to make it that far — and as the visa applications of thousands of Ukrainian refugees are being expedited, some in Canada’s Afghan communities are wondering why.
