Dozens of Afghan interpreters that worked with Canada’s military initiated a hunger strike on Parliament Hill Thursday to demand that the federal government do more to help their endangered families left behind in Afghanistan. “We’re asking the government to find safe pathways for our families to emigrate from Afghanistan,” Ahmad Sayed, a former Afghan interpreter and organizer of the demonstration in Ottawa, told Global News.

More than a hundred former Afghan interpreters gathered at the Centennial Flame in Ottawa today, starting a hunger strike to mark the seven-month anniversary of the last NATO troops leaving Kabul, and demanding the Canadian government pick up the pace in bringing over loved ones still stuck in Afghanistan or neighbouring countries. “My family, my brother, his wife, their kids, they are hiding, because the Taliban are still looking for those people, like a search operation, or you can say like a revenge operation,” said Naqubullah Muhammad Nasim.

Liudmila Striliana had just had a hysterectomy when Russian bombs started raining down on her hometown in Ukraine. Last week, the lab in Ukraine contacted Striliana and told her they’d found cancer in her Fallopian tube and that she would need to start chemotherapy as soon as possible. On Sunday, she returned to her war-torn homeland so her treatment wouldn’t be a financial burden on her daughter here.

Seeing images of the destruction in Ukraine reminds Paul Doyle of the damage inflicted on civilians during the Second World War. Witnessing Russia’s ongoing attack on Ukraine has inspired him to give back by offering to open his own home to some of the nearly four million refugees who have fled Ukraine. Doyle and his wife, Maureen, who are both retired and live in Maple Ridge, B.C., are willing to open their home to a family for as long as it’s needed, he said, offering a spare bedroom with two bunk beds big enough for three children and two adults.
