Mina Melad Gerges Makar and his family had to leave Canada for Ukraine after his immigration application was rejected in January. But a month later, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced the Makars to flee to Switzerland. Now, he’s hoping to return to Canada and his lawyer believes the Makars have a “strong case” to make to Canadian immigration officials, but the backlog in the immigration system remain a significant hurdle.

The government announced a dedicated refugee-resettlement program for Afghans last summer, as U.S. troops prepared to leave the country and the Taliban started making gains. Among those seeking protection are Afghans who served the Canadian military and diplomatic mission in the conflict zone. Canada has welcomed 11,165 Afghan refugees since, but as other refugee crises emerge globally, putting more pressure on the already-strained immigration system, Afghans are worried their dreams of starting a new life in Canada have been stalled or forgotten entirely.

National Post – Even in Times of War, the Bureaucracy Never Stops: A Young Ukrainian’s Struggle to Get Back to Canada

Hanna Kryvun, 24, left Toronto during the Christmas holidays to see her family in Berdyansk, Ukraine, but was twice denied re-entry to Canada. The second time, in a layover in Turkey, she was told she could not leave because she did not have a temporary resident visa (TRV) even if she has a post-graduate work permit. Back in Ukraine, she applied for the TRV on Feb. 9 and was told processing times would be 10 days, but shortly after, the Canadian Embassy office she had applied through in Kyiv closed due to the threat of war.

Toronto Star – Ontario Extends OHIP Coverage To Ukrainians Taking Refuge Here From Russian Invasion

Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion who arrived in Ontario are now eligible for OHIP coverage – from primary health care to optometrist services.  The province has amended the Health Insurance Act to extend OHIP to include individuals arriving under Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel according to a notice posted by the Ministry of Health.

CBC News – Settlement Services Offered To Ukrainians Arriving At 3 Airports In Canada

Settlement agencies across the country have joined forces to support Ukrainians arriving through a federal emergency program at three airports, Canada’s immigration minister said Tuesday. Sean Fraser said 41,000 people have been approved through an emergency travel initiative launched last month to help people resettle after many fled to Europe to escape Russia’s war on Ukraine.

BBC News – Rwanda Asylum Seekers: UK Government Criticized Over ‘Cruel’ Plan

Plans to send some asylum seekers who arrive in the UK on small boats to live in Rwanda have been described as “absolutely chilling” and “cruel and nasty” by charities and politicians. The government has faced fierce criticism for the policy with questions raised over costs and impact as well as Rwanda’s human rights record.
