CityNews – Toronto Man Prevented from Being with Dying Mother Due to Backlog in Immigration System
Toronto resident Hailu Damene is helpless as his mother’s condition worsens. She’s receiving cancer treatments in Kenya, but he can’t leave the country to be with her because his immigration documents are in limbo. Back in August, Damene mailed off his passport and birth certificate to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Almost nine months later, there has been no movement on his file. After his mother’s diagnosis last fall, he then applied for urgent travel documents, however, that file is also stuck in the processing backlog.
Toronto Star – ‘My Dream Is That I Can Live Freely’: This Refugee Is Among the LGBTQ+ Afghans Who Are Waiting on Canada
Growing up in western Afghanistan, Yama/Yalda Ahmadi was ridiculed so much by neighbours and school peers that their family had to send them to live in Kabul. Ahmadi, born intersex with both male and female genitalia, was raised as a girl until age five, when their parents made them dress as a boy and changed their name. As someone who identifies as LGBTQ+, Ahmadi says they knew their life would be at risk when the Taliban made its comeback in 2021.

CBC News – Immigrants Cry Foul After Permanent Residency Cards Lost, Stuck at Ministry Office for Months
Permanent residents living in Canada say they couldn’t access health coverage, employment insurance or COVID-19 benefits, and weren’t guaranteed re-entry if they travelled, because their already-issued permanent residency cards were either lost by a federal department or sat around at the ministry for nearly a year. “It was traumatic,” said Gloria Mbaga, an Ottawa resident whose renewed permanent residency (PR) card was issued in May 2021 but couldn’t be picked up until this March — more than 10 months later.

A Nova Scotian who will soon be opening her doors to temporarily host a Ukrainian refugee family is calling on the federal government to waive costly medical screening fees upon their arrival. “(They) have spent every penny that they’ve got, fleeing from their home, and getting flights here. And then all of the sudden, they’ve got to find another $1,200,” Vanessa Powell said.
