People working long hours who may be unsure how the political system works and if their vote will make a difference are the target for a variety of organizations hoping to them to get out to the polls. These organizations say they recognize that newcomers, those with lower incomes and those from racialized and marginalized groups, may face unique barriers. So, they’re launching targeted, creative, non-partisan campaigns to try to turn could-be voters into will-be voters.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s population is aging, and deaths have outnumbered births since 2016. The government has looked to immigration as a way to help grow that population; the province plans to welcome 5,100 immigrants into the province per year by 2026. . Eduardo Araujo, co-lead of advocacy and campaigns with the Anti-Racism Coalition of Newfoundland and Labrador, said while the government is looking to immigrants as a solution to population and economic woes, some migrants are struggling to access health care.

Oksana Kosteckyj is keeping careful watch over the Ukrainian children who joined R.F. Morrison Elementary this month, making sure they and their families feel welcome at the Winnipeg school. There, this week, young newcomers joined in on holiday activities — like making loaves of paska (braided yeast bread) — while sitting in classrooms colourfully decorated in anticipation of Orthodox Easter this weekend.

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that Express Entry draws will soon resume and that invitations for candidates to apply for permanent residence will begin in early July.
Le kiosque d’accueil pour réfugiés ukrainiens mis en place à l’aéroport Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau a reçu 436 personnes entre le 1er et le 18 avril, selon des chiffres fournis par le ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI). Ce kiosque, visiblement identifiable dans la zone des arrivées internationales, est conjointement tenu par du personnel du MIFI et par des intervenants du Centre social d’aide aux immigrants, qui parlent le russe et l’ukrainien. C’est une manière de permettre aux ressortissants ukrainiens d’aller s’informer adéquatement dès leur arrivée en territoire québécois, dans leur langue natale.
