Global News – Makeup Artist Who Fled Ukraine with Nothing Gifted Supplies, Scholarship in B.C.

It’s been six weeks since Ukrainian makeup artist Valeryya Stashenko arrived in Canada, leaving both her family and all of her supplies behind. Since she began working in B.C., Stashenko has had to borrow and return makeup supplies, without the funds to rebuild her own stock. That changed Tuesday, however, when she was gifted — by surprise — with a suite of new kits and hair products, along with a full scholarship to any program offered at Blanche Macdonald.

CityNews Toronto – Former International Student Fears Deportation Due to Canada’s Backlogged Immigration System

Tijuana Turner, 28, worries she’ll be forced to leave Canada as her work permit is set to expire in 12 months and the backlog in Canada’s immigration system has halted the application process for permanent residency. Turner came to Toronto in 2015 as an international student and was granted a three-year work permit after graduating university. For those in Turner’s position, once they qualify, they have to wait for an invitation to apply for permanent residency and that process has been halted since September, with invitations only going out to some provincial nominees.

Toronto Star – Experts Say Fire Safety Is Crucial Information for Newcomers

With the recent fire tragedies in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) such as the house fire that killed three children, and the death of a family of five (both in Brampton), to the fire incident in Scarborough that severely injured a man — conversations regarding the cultural habits that may pose fire hazards have resurfaced, according to experts. In fact, the investigating officials discovered that the house the Brampton family of five lived in, did not have a working smoke alarm.
