Windsor Star – Former Refugee Who Carried Brother Away from War Receives Inspire Award

For 10 days, Moussa Keita walked while carrying an older brother on his back and hiding from soldiers, bombs and bullets. He was only 13 when his Ivory Coast homeland was plunged into the chaos of civil war. Keita is among three people, with Dr. Christos (Chris) Spirou and Anita Imperioli, who will be honoured by the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County Thursday night during the Herb Gray Harmony Awards Gala.

CBC News – Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers Await Overwhelming Influx of Ukrainian Newcomers

After helping hundreds of newcomers and refugees — including recent waves of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan — the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN) is now preparing for a significant influx of Ukrainian newcomers. More than five million people have fled Ukraine since the war started. Thousands of them will be coming to Canada and many of them are, or will be, living in the Edmonton region.

CBC News – Refugees from Ukraine Will Arrive in N.L. Within Days. Here’s Where Preparations Stand

Newfoundland and Labrador volunteers are getting ready for the first plane of refugees to arrive May 9 from war-torn Ukraine, and are making sure that the necessities of life, toiletries and food will be on hand. Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne says there is capacity for 175 seats on Monday’s flight, although the final number of confirmed passengers is still unknown. The province has a team of four employees in Poland helping refugees with support and the documentation required to move them to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Global News – Flight Logistics Slowing Ukrainian Refugee Arrivals in Canada: Alghabra

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says Canadian airlines are standing by to help bring charter flights of Ukrainian refugees to Canada as soon as some logistical hurdles are overcome. Alghabra said last month that Ottawa had deals with airlines to bring charter flights to Canada. He says today that it is proving harder than expected to pull flights together because the refugees are not all in the same place.

Toronto Star – Immigrant Professors Say They Need to “Act White” in Canadian Academia

Racialized faculty members not only carry the emotional labour in an academic institution, but they also find themselves constantly needing to “transform themselves” in order to be accepted by their colleagues and students, according to a Black professor at Edmonton’s MacEwan University. Hellen Gateri, an associate professor at the university’s school of social work, was one of three immigrants working in academia who shared stories about the racism and discrimination faced while working at a Canadian university.

CBC News – Edmonton Woman Helping Ukrainians Navigate Immigration Process

An Edmonton woman assisting Ukrainians navigate Canada’s immigration process hopes she will someday meet the people she’s volunteered to help. Nataliya Kuts moved to Canada from Ukraine 13 years ago. She earned a diploma in immigration consultation but works teaching English as a second language. When war broke out in her home country in February, Kuts took to social media to offer free assistance to anyone who needed it.
