La présidente du caucus néo-démocrate à Ottawa veut obtenir des réponses urgentes de l’Immigration sur ce qui est arrivé aux demandes de 2900 Afghans qui avaient aidé les militaires canadiens – et qui ont déjà été dûment « accrédités » par l’armée. Jenny Kwan demande au ministre de l’Immigration, Sean Fraser, d’expliquer pourquoi des Afghans, dont les documents ont pourtant été dûment contrôlés et vérifiés par l’armée canadienne, n’ont pu faire approuver ensuite par l’Immigration leur demande de venir au Canada.

The Parti Québécois is calling for the shutdown of Roxham Rd., a focal point for irregular immigration into Canada. A record number of entries have been reported since the road was reopened in November. “We were, for the first three months of the year, at 7,000 entries and we can soon expect 10,000,” PQ MNA Pascal Bérubé told reporters on Tuesday. “That’s more than 90 per cent of the illegal entries into Canada. It can’t go on.”

Dozens gathered outside a Metro Vancouver school Monday night protesting what they call flaws in Canada’s immigration system. The rally outside an elementary school in New Westminster was in support of a family facing deportation to Mexico 13 years after they fled the country. The couple made a refugee claim when they first arrived in Canada, but that claim was denied.

Defence chief Gen. Wayne Eyre told a parliamentary committee Monday night that the Defence Department had checked and verified the credentials of 3,800 Afghans, including interpreters, who supported the Canadian military. But the committee heard from Eyre and Bill Matthews, deputy defence minister, that only 900 of them have had their applications to come to Canada accepted so far by the Immigration Department.

A group of volunteers in Stratford has reinstated its program that helps vulnerable refugees from around the world settle in Canada. The Stratford Welcomes Refugees program started in 2015 but was put on hold during the pandemic creating a backlog for the organization. Over the years, families have come from countries like Afghanistan,Somalia, Sudan — and Syria where Lina Hmidi and her family came from.
