CTV News – Quebec Should ‘Ideally’ Aim for 100,000 Immigrants per Year, Says CPQ
Quebec should aim to welcome 100,000 immigrants per year, according to the Conseil du patronat (CPQ). The number is almost twice the threshold set by the Quebec government. The CPQ made the request in a white paper on immigration made public Monday. A little over a week ago, the Conseil du patronat, along with employer organizations, had instead suggested a threshold of 80,000 newcomers per year to alleviate labour shortages.

Many Ukrainians applying to come to Canada as Russia’s invasion of their country drags on are doing so as an “insurance policy” and a “backup plan,” the Canadian immigration minister has said. In an interview Sunday with The West Block‘s guest host, Eric Sorensen, Sean Fraser said more than 100,000 applications have been approved from among the roughly 200,000-large inventory. But, he said it’s difficult to predict how many Ukrainians will actually come to Canada either on a temporary basis or to settle permanently.

The death of an Indian student in Toronto last month made international headlines, but while Kartik Vasudev’s story ended in tragedy, his parents’ sacrifices offer a glimpse into the hardships that many international students and their families face to achieve the dream of a future in Canada. Vasudev’s father, Jitesh Vasudev, told CBC News he and his wife spent their entire life savings and mortgaged their house to take out a loan of $50,000, just to afford the first year of his son’s education in Canada, before he was shot and killed.

Il y a 200 000 jeunes qui ne sont ni aux études ni en emploi ; il y a 180 000 chômeurs et il y a 80 000 travailleurs de 60 ans et plus qui pourraient s’ajouter à la force de travail en ramenant le taux d’emploi des travailleurs âgés au niveau de [celui de] l’Ontario ».

Mental-health professionals are volunteering their services to provide trauma support for Ukrainian Canadians and newcomers fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Shortly after the war started in late February, Alexandra Froese started hearing from Ukrainian Canadians who were looking for support as they watched and grieved their homeland under siege. Froese, who was born and grew up in Ukraine, is a registered psychologist based in Saskatoon.
