Toronto Star – Canada’s Use of Criminal Jails for Immigration Detainees Violates Charter, Lawsuit Alleges

Canada’s use of maximum-security provincial jails for immigration detention is under fire again as two former detainees have launched a class-action lawsuit against the federal government alleging the practice violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Immigration detainees are not criminally charged and their detention is not supposed to be punitive.

Globe and Mail – Afghan Man Hoping for Resettlement in Canada Shot Dead by Taliban, Advocacy Group Says

Yama Naseemi was shot in the forehead outside of his Kabul home Saturday, according to an advocacy group leading an evacuation effort for some of the most vulnerable Afghans. Operation Abraham, as the group is known, has provided the Liberal government with a list of approximately 95 Afghans who need immediate protection, including Mr. Naseemi and his family members.

CBC News – Nova Scotians Encouraged to ‘Open Their Hearts and Their Homes’ to Ukrainian Refugees

Canada has accepted more than 100,000 applications under the new Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel visa. Nova Scotia has already welcomed more than 100 Ukrainians and is preparing to welcome 300 more on June 2. More are expected after that. With the continuous influx, the provincial government is working to plan settlement services and housing for hundreds on short notice. The result is that many Nova Scotians have had to open their homes.

CBC News – Ukrainian Refugees Face Language Barriers as They Settle in Southwestern Ontario

Daria Yepifanova fled Ukraine on March 8 with her mother Natalya and a one-year-old baby, about two weeks after Russia first invaded. Her city, Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine is just 50 kilometres from the Russian border. It was attacked on the first day of the offensive on February 24. “We try to learn English, it’s very hard for us,” said Yepifanova, who arrived to Canada on April 12.
