La Presse – Le premier des trois vols nolisés est arrivé à Winnipeg

Le premier des trois vols nolisés transportant des réfugiés ukrainiens fuyant l’invasion russe a atterri au Manitoba lundi après-midi. Le ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté, Sean Fraser, a affirmé que les trois vols devaient contribuer à amener environ 900 Ukrainiens approuvés pour un séjour d’urgence au Canada. Le vol s’est posé à l’aéroport international Richardson de Winnipeg. Le deuxième vol d’avion partira pour Montréal depuis la Pologne le 29 mai et le troisième, à destination d’Halifax, décollera le 2 juin.

Canada has one of the world’s largest populations of people with Ukrainian heritage, yet Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the smallest – with just around 1,400 people. But the province, with a small army of volunteers, is resettling hundreds of Ukrainians as part of a massive humanitarian effort to connect the newcomers with jobs, homes, furniture, dishes, clothes, bank accounts, health care access, social insurance numbers and food.

CBC News – First Charter Plane with Ukrainian Newcomers Lands in Winnipeg, Welcomed by Prior Immigrant Volunteers

The flight from Warsaw, Poland landed around 3:45 p.m. Winnipeg time, with 350 passengers and some pets on board. Premier Heather Stefanson was at the airport to welcome the Ukrainian arrivals. In March, the provincial government established a task force dedicated to coordinating the arrival of Ukrainians and to establish services to help them transition to life in Manitoba.

Global News – Hundreds of Ukrainian Refugees Land in Canada on 1st of 3 Chartered Flights

The flight from Warsaw to Winnipeg, which touched down at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport around 3:45 p.m., was the first of three charter flights to Canadian cities. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has said the flights will bring approximately 900 Ukrainians approved for emergency travel into Canada.

CTV News – Shameful and Racist: Trudeau on the Komagata Maru Incident

Monday marks the 108th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident, which led to the deaths of more than a dozen people. The Komagata Maru was a steamship that brought 376 Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus of South Asian origin to Vancouver. These people hoped to settle in Canada, but instead were turned away “due to the racist and discriminatory laws of the time,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
