Global News – After Daughter Killed by Taliban, Canadian Forces Employee escapes to Alberta
Bashir Ahmadi admits his fresh start has been bittersweet because of the absence of his daughter, Nazifa. The Taliban killed her at a military checkpoint on Dec. 10, a painful reminder of the dangers of leaving allies behind. The fatal shooting of the 10-year-old shows the risks Afghans face as they wait for the Canadian government to live up to its pledge to resettle employees of its former military, diplomatic and humanitarian missions in Afghanistan.
CBC News – Manitoba Orders Regulator to Remove Barrier that Prevented Some Internationally Trained Nurses from Working
Health Minister Audrey Gordon is promising to remove perhaps the biggest obstacle for internationally trained nurses working in another province who are trying to move back to Manitoba. Gordon has issued a compliance order that forces the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba to remove its requirement that internationally educated nurses already licensed in other jurisdictions in Canada be subject to further testing if they’re trying again to be accredited in Manitoba.
CBC News – ‘I Feel Helpless’: Ukrainian Newcomers Denied Subsidized Daycare in Quebec Due to Status
When Oleksandra Zhovtiuk chose to settle in Quebec after fleeing her war-torn city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, she said she chose the French province for one reason: its renowned low-cost government daycares. After arriving in Quebec in July, Zhovtiuk quickly applied for spots for her two youngest at two local subsidized daycares and got accepted at both. So it came as a shock to Zhovtiuk when both daycares abruptly withdrew the spots, telling her it was due to her newcomer status.

The man claims to be Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, with a Facebook profile displaying the minister’s name and image. Valentina Dritton tells CityNews a friend showed her the profile and after consulting with family, she felt it was legitimate.
Ottawa Citizen – ‘Still Stuck in Limbo’: Afghans Grow Increasingly Desperate in Immigration Waiting Game
Afghan women’s rights worker Farzana Adell Ghadiya lives in an undisclosed country, dependent on gifts from supporters — her savings have run out — while a network of Canadians works to bring her here. “Farzana, because of her past work, is on the hit list,” said Matthew Behrens, co-ordinator of the Rural Refugee Rights Network. “She’ll be dead if we don’t get her out of there.” One year after the fall of Kabul, when Afghanistan’s capital city was captured by the Taliban, Canada’s efforts to resettle 40,000 Afghan refugees are a “lethal failure,” Behrens said.
