Toronto Star – They Were Hunting for a Rapist, but OPP Ended Up Walking Over Migrant Farm Workers’ Rights, Tribunal Finds

In a decision released this week, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario found that lead complainant Leon Logan, a former migrant worker from Jamaica, was targeted because of his race, colour and place of origin. The sweep in question was undertaken even though many of the workers did not fit the description police had of a suspect. “We won,” exclaimed Logan, 37, in a telephone interview from South Carolina, where he now works in construction on a work visa.

CBC News – Ontario Nursing, Physician Colleges Present Plans to Speed Up Registration for Internationally Trained Workers

Health Minister Sylvia Jones recently directed the College of Nurses of Ontario and the College of Physicians and Surgeons to develop these plans amid a health-care staffing shortage that has led to temporary emergency room closures. The nurses’ plan includes registering thousands of internationally educated nurses on a temporary basis, while the physicians’ plan asks for more residency spots and pathways to licensing.

CBC News – Afghan Advisors Who Helped Canada’s Military Say Gov’t Has Further Delayed Rescue of Families from Taliban

Some 45 language and cultural advisers — Canadian citizens who were recent Afghan immigrants — were recruited by Canada’s Department of National Defence to carry out dangerous assignments like gathering intelligence on the Taliban and warning of attacks during the war in Afghanistan. Now, a year after some of these advisers asked Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to help their family members get out of Afghanistan, they say nothing has happened. Four have filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission against IRCC.

CTV News – Manitoba to Welcome Influx of Afghan Refugees

CTV News Winnipeg has learned a charter flight carrying 350 government-assisted refugees is set to arrive in Winnipeg next week. A provincial spokesperson confirmed the charter is part of the Canadian government’s commitment to resettle 40,000 Afghans in Canada following the Taliban take over one year ago. So far, 17,375 Afghans have arrived in the country.
