CTV News – Businesses Urge Quebec Parties to Raise Immigration – A Hard Sell Ahead of Election

Days ahead of the start to Quebec’s election campaign, Michel Leblanc, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, said businesses in the region are struggling to find workers. Labour shortages, he added, are forcing companies to pay higher salaries, leave contracts unfulfilled or lower the quality of their services. The chamber urged the parties vying to form the next government to commit to raising immigration targets to at least 64,000 a year to help fill what it said was more than 220,000 vacant jobs across the province.

Al Jazeera – Jamaican Farmworkers Decry ‘Seismic-Level Exploitation’ in Canada

Jamaican agricultural workers say they face conditions akin to “systematic slavery” on Canadian farms, as they call on Jamaica to address systemic problems in a decades-old, migrant labour programme in Canada. In a letter sent to Jamaica’s minister of labour and social security earlier this month, workers affiliated with rights group Migrant Workers Alliance for Change (MWAC) said they have been “treated like mules” on two farms in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province.

Volodymyr Saiko, his wife Olena and their two-year-old daughter Zlata applied in April to come to Canada with their cat after fleeing their hometown near Mariupol, one of the most bombed cities in Ukraine since the start of the war in February. Since then, the family has been waiting for a resolution to their visa application, receiving from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) no other answer about their process than they have to keep waiting, said Jody Brouwer, a Strathroy resident who will be hosting the Saikos family.
