Canada will accept some 1,000 Afghans who fled the Taliban takeover of their homeland and have been held for months in a makeshift refugee centre in the United Arab Emirates awaiting resettlement to the United States and elsewhere, seven sources said. Ottawa has agreed to a U.S. request to resettle some of the 5,000 Afghans still in Emirates Humanitarian City in Abu Dhabi, the sources said, and Canadian officials were now reviewing cases to identify those who meet Ottawa’s resettlement criteria.

At first, Teresa Shum and her husband, Mark, thought the situation was funny. The Markham, Ont., couple received a notice in February from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that one of Mark’s tax credits was declined due to his marital status being changed to widower. The humour quickly dissipated when they realized the situation couldn’t be fixed immediately and Shum, who is retired, would be missing out on certain benefits.

Une nouvelle projection démographique que Statistique Canada publie jeudi illustre qu’en 2041, le Canada aura une population plus nombreuse, plus cosmopolite et comportant plus de différences d’une région à l’autre. Statistique Canada rappelle que l’immigration demeure le principal moteur de la croissance démographique au cours des prochaines décennies. En conséquence, en 2041, la proportion d’immigrants au sein de la population pourrait atteindre entre 29,1 % et 34 % selon le scénario retenu, en hausse par rapport à 21,9 % en 2016.
